2011’s Scream 4 was a reboot of 1996’s Scream franchise after a lucrative trilogy of slasher films which ended in 2000. Well, it’s been 10 years since the last reboot, so time to do it again, I guess! The new fifth installment, also called Scream, stars OGs Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette and a trailer just dropped for the film due out on January 14. “Do you like scary movies?” I don’t really, so I probably won’t be watching this but if you love watching people get stabbed to death by a regular man in a scary costume who has mastered the elements of surprise and stalking, this is for you!
In the film, the original victim, Sydney Prescott (Neve) returns to town after a call from Dewey Riley (David) and she and her bestie Gale Weathers (Courtney) help a new era of people survive Ghostface’s murderous bullshit. Original horror-master and creator of the series, Wes Craven, passed away in 2015, so the newest film was directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpen and Tyler Gillet with original Scream writer, Kevin Williamson, executive producing. New faces in the cast are Kyle Gallner, Mason Gooding, Mikey Madison, Dylan Minnette, Jenna Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sonia Ammar, Jack Quaid, and Melissa Barrera.
The Scream trailer opens with a play on the original death of Drew Barrymore who appears in the first film for like five minutes and dies tragically when what she thinks is a prank call turns to murder. But this is 2021! We don’t use landlines, and a teenager (played by Jenna Ortega) is too busy texting a “friend” to answer. Until that friend tells her to answer the call and reveals it’s not her friend Amber–it’s a killer! And then it shows the only part of the trailer I enjoyed (besides the OGs feeding me 90s nostalgia) which was when the house full of automatic locks gets hacked and the killer starts unlocking this poor teen’s doors. See, this is why I would never get a SmartHome. Y’all are asking for it!

And here’s the actual trailer which reveals practically every single death in the movie:
Cut to Megyn Kelly getting confused by the killer’s name of Ghostface going: “Oh so they can make a whole movie about someone pretending to be a ghost by putting on a ghostface but blackface is wrong?”
